At Asuncion Dental Group, we are proud to offer all of the services that you need to maintain or restore oral health that is so closely linked to overall health, well-being, and quality of life. We are also pleased to offer so many different options within each category of services or treatments. For instance, Dr. Frederick Asuncion not only has several options for tooth replacement at his office in Frederick, Maryland, but he has several options for dental implants. The best choice for you depends on several factors, from your needs and anatomical characteristics to your lifestyle, goals, and budget.

A word on the gold standard in tooth replacement

So, what makes dental implants so unique? Crowns, bridges, and dentures that are upheld by dental implants are designed like natural teeth. Conventional methods to replace missing teeth only replace the tooth portion seen above the gumline: the crown. Gum tissue may also be replicated in dentures that sit on top of the tissues in the upper or lower jaw. Dental implant-retained systems replace both the visible part of the teeth and the part that you cannot see: the tooth roots in the jawbone.

Many of the common complaints with tooth replacement options have to do with their fit. As time marches on, the facial bone tends to resorb or shrink. As the supporting bone is lost, the dentures that depend on that surrounding tissue for their stability become loose. They may slide around in the mouth and rub up against delicate tissues. Ill-fitting dentures can also cause patients to retreat socially out of fear that their dentures will slip when eating in public or speaking in groups or social settings.

All implant-retained systems, including dentures, are designed to prevent bone loss. Since the bone gets stimulation from teeth connected to the surrounding tissues (by way of implants), the jaw remains strong. Patients derive utmost satisfaction from their implant-supported teeth for many years to come. That is, as long as they keep up with good oral hygiene and professional cleanings and check-ups at our office. Even implants are susceptible to gum disease-like inflammation around the implant. Generally, though, upkeep is very straightforward. You don’t have to contend with messy, annoying adhesive products or specialized cleaning methods.

Implants options for many smiles

Traditionally, patients with an existing bone loss would have to build up bone in the treatment area with procedures (such as bone grafting) to be suitable candidates for implants. However, some patients who have experienced bone resorption may be well-suited to another type of dental implant: mini-implants. Yes, these implants are smaller than their standard counterparts. They can be placed via conservative techniques. It is an appealing option for those who are not good candidates for surgery.

Additionally, at Asuncion Dental Group, you do not need to have one implant placed to support every tooth that must be replaced. Instead, we can place as few as four dental implants to effectively support an entire arch (upper or lower jaw) of new teeth. Strategic implant placement minimizes trauma, time spent in the treatment chair, and costs.
