Tooth Colored Fillings

The conservative, cosmetic way to repair cavities with Tooth-colored Composite Fillings

Still, think of silver-hued teeth when you hear the word “fillings”? If so, your perception of cavity treatment needs a makeover! At Asuncion Dental Group, we are happy to offer aesthetic tooth-colored dental fillings from our office in Frederick, Maryland. Aesthetics are just one of the numerous benefits of this standard, metal-free restorative treatment.

Basics about fillings

Tooth-colored fillings are often made from a type of dental material called “composite resin.” This material is formulated with resin (plastic) and glass-like particles. When color-matched to blend in with the surrounding teeth, the composite mimics the properties of natural tooth enamel.

Traditionally, fillings have been formulated with a combination of metals (amalgam). While amalgam fillings may appear silver in color, around 50% of the filling (by weight) is made from mercury. It is a controversial dental material. Dr. Frederick Asuncion avoids the use of mercury-containing amalgams.

Dental composites present a biocompatible (tissue-friendly) way to rebuild damaged teeth. So, they are appropriate for patients with sensitivities or allergies to metals. Additionally, these fillings are conservative. A conservative dental restoration preserves a maximum amount of the natural tooth structure. Less of the natural tooth is altered to accommodate the new tooth material. The existing healthy, natural tooth structure helps to support the filling and, in turn, the long-term strength and integrity of the treated tooth.

Fillings placement

Silver fillings represent a type of indirect restoration. The filling is designed and made outside of the mouth from a mix of metal alloys. The damaged part of the tooth is removed and shaped to make room for the filling. Once the filling is ready, it is introduced to the prepared treatment site and cemented securely into place.

Composite fillings generally represent a direct restoration. The composite material is prepared and applied directly to the treatment site after the damaged tooth structure has been removed. As each layer is placed, it is hardened for utmost strength. Lastly, the tooth is refined and polished. So, its brilliance can shine! Due to how the composite is placed as a direct restoration, less of the natural tooth is altered or “drilled away” to accommodate the filling.

We encourage you to contact us at (301) 690-8482 before pain or other concerning symptoms arise. If decay is detected and addressed early enough, restorations, including fillings, can be avoided. All that may be required to resolve your problem is slight modifications to oral care products or hygiene techniques!
